10 Things I Wish I Had Known Before I Started My Dissertation

Thing 7:  Be Vigilant When Selecting Your Advisor

Your advisor is your advocate and mentor through the entire process.  Do some research before selecting an advisor.  Do not let the department make the selection for you.  Your advisor will be your advocate through the dissertation process – start to finish.  The advisor must have a thorough knowledge of research, the process and be highly organized.  Gain information though interaction with your doctoral peers.  Attend proposal and dissertation defenses.  This should give you a good idea which doctoral students are flowing through the process and those who are struggling. Your advisor can guide you through obstacles or even better, remove the obstacles.  This decision is critical to your success.
