Chapter 2, Dick Carey and Carey Model of Instructional Design - Week 2 Post 2 of 3

The Dick, Carey and Carey model of instructional design.

The model appears to  adhere to the six characteristics of instructional design, although two characteristics are inferred.  The model is learner centered in that it designs instruction based on entry behaviors.  There is also and the component to revise instruction after instructional analysis.  Goal orientation is achieved through identifying instructional goals and writing performance objectives with the achievement monitored by criterion referenced tests, formative and summative evaluations.  The meaningful performance is supported through revising instruction and continued evaluation through formative and summative means.  Criterion referenced tests measure outcomes in a reliable and valid way.  Conducting instructional analysis and formative evaluations are evidence that the design is empirical and self-correcting.   The interactive component is inferred from the development process as is the team effort.
I have added some additional parts to the instructional design team.  First, I added selecting an instructional design team, each of whom will bring a different expertise and perspective to the design process and including making team assignments.   In designing any lesson it is essential to know the audience and their knowledge level in preparing instructional materials.  In my workplace all instructional decisions are based on data analysis and review.  This will also be beneficial in knowing the level of the consumer.  The last addition is the inclusion of a consumer evaluation to the criterion based, formative and summative evaluations.  From the information obtained from these evaluations aninstructional redesign can be identified.
Ø  Select Instructional Design Team
Ø  Identify Audience/Consumer – Age level, education level and current level of academic or technological performance
Ø  Instructional Need – Obtain historical performance data
Ø  Make Instructional Team Assignments
Ø  Identify Instructional Goals
Ø  Write objectives corresponding with instructional goals
Ø  Design and Select Instructional Materials
Ø  Create Evaluation Instruments, Formative  (methods of formative assessment) , Criterion Based, Summative and Consumer Evaluation Instruments
Ø  Develop Instructional Strategy
Ø  Analyze consumer performance related to goals and consumer feedback
Ø  Redesign
