I'm Back Again...

It has been almost a year since I posted.  I plan to complete what I start and therefore will finish my 10 Things I Wish I had Known...   I met with unspeakable tragedy this past year.  I did not know I could keep going.  It happened shortly after I completed my research.   I am in the process of healing and resuming my life.  The motivation is to dedicate my dissertation to the loved one I have lost.

It is my plan to publish at least weekly to share what I have accomplished and how the work is going.  Thank you for reading my blog.

Quotation

I found this quotation and laughed out loud.

A man who carries a cat by the tail learns something he can learn in no other way.

Dissertation Progress Today

My epiphany today involves the use of Skype in conducting research.   The component of Skype I used is free and is much easier to use than I thought. Skype enables you to have a video phone call with another Skype member.  You both must have accounts, add one another as you would a friend on a social network, and then call.  You have the option of turning off video if you are having a bad hair day.   I am looking forward to much more communication with family members.

10 Things I Wish I Had Known Before I Started My Dissertation

Thing 7:  Be Vigilant When Selecting Your Advisor

Your advisor is your advocate and mentor through the entire process.  Do some research before selecting an advisor.  Do not let the department make the selection for you.  Your advisor will be your advocate through the dissertation process – start to finish.  The advisor must have a thorough knowledge of research, the process and be highly organized.  Gain information though interaction with your doctoral peers.  Attend proposal and dissertation defenses.  This should give you a good idea which doctoral students are flowing through the process and those who are struggling. Your advisor can guide you through obstacles or even better, remove the obstacles.  This decision is critical to your success.

Dissertation Update

I a still refining my "10 Things" series.  I am meeting a little slowdown with my interviewing.  I hope to have it on course soon.  That is why one of my "10 Things" is knowing your research types.  As I said, I like the product achieved by the qualitative research, but it is time consuming and you find yourself depending on the schedules of others.  I now have two-thirds of my interviews completed, but I am encountering scheduling roadblocks in completing the others.

10 Things I Wish I Had Known Before I Started My Dissertation

Thing 6:  Look for funding

I cannot say I know anything about this, but that it exists.  Start researching sources early.  Your dissertation is expensive in terms of supplies, electronics, books, transportation and your time.
